Eligibility for certification is determined by your program and certification track. Please be sure you are aware of all requirements for certification. Do not apply for certification until 1.) all requirements have been met, including passing all required TExES exams and 2.) the deadline to begin applying has passed.

Initial Certification-Seeking Students (Undergraduate and non-degree seeking Post-Baccalaureates)

Initial certification-seeking students will be eligible to apply for certification through their TEAL account at the end of their final semester, permitting that they have completed the following state and program requirements:

    1. Passed all TExES certification exams (content, PPR, and any required supplemental exams).
    2. Successfully completed all coursework, including Student Teaching/Clinical Practice.
    3. Maintained a 2.75 GPA in major coursework.

Undergraduate students: After your degree has been conferred and is listed on your official UNT transcript, our Certification Specialist will process your application and recommend you for certification to the Texas Education Agency.

Post-Baccalaureate students: After your grades have posted to your official UNT transcript, our Certification Specialist will process your application and recommend you for certification to the Texas Education Agency.

Professional Certification-Seeking Students

Professional certification students seeking Principal, School Librarian, School Counselor, or Educational Diagnostician will be eligible to apply for certification through their TEAL account upon completion of their program, permitting that they have completed the following state and program requirements:

    1. Passed all TExES certification exams.
    2. Successfully completed all coursework, including Internship/Practicum.
    3. Hold a Master's Degree
    4. Submit a Teacher Service record to the Certification Specialist at UNT showing 2 years teaching experience.
    5. Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate (except School Counselors and School Librarians).

Professional certification students seeking Superintendent must also hold a Principal certificate in additional to completing coursework, including practicum, holding a Master's degree, and passing their required TExES certification exam.

Teacher Service Records (TSR) can be obtained through your school district's HR Department/Personnel Office. The document must be signed by an authorized person from your district and must show all applicable experience as a Teacher of Record.  You can fax your TSR to the College of Education Student Advising Office at 940-565-2728. Even if you have provided a copy of your TSR to your program, please also submit a copy to the Student Advising Office to prevent a delay in the issuance of your certificate.

How to Apply for Certification

Our Applying for Certification and Completing Fingerprinting Guide is a step by step instruction manual that walks you through the entire application process.  Note, if you have never set up a TEAL account, you will need to do so prior to applying. Please see the TEAL/ETS Registration Guide for instructions.

When completing your application for certification, you must pay the application and fingerprinting fees. If you are not given the option to pay for fingerprinting, you have probably already completed the fingerprinting requirement. You can ensure this by checking the status in the Fingerprint Status tab your TEAL account, or by calling TEA at 512-936-8400 (Option 3). If you have not completed the fingerprint requirement, you will receive a FAST PASS email within 24 hours of submitting your application and paying all applicable fees. The FAST PASS email will contain instructions and a code you will use to schedule your fingerprinting appointment.  The email will be sent to the email address listed with TEA, so check your TEAL account for the email address on file and update as needed.

After all fees are paid, fingerprinting has been complete, and UNT has officially recommended you, the Texas Education Agency will complete a background check and process your application. Your certificate will then be issued. You can view/print your certificate under the View Certificates tab in your TEAL account.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will I be recommended?

This is not a question UNT can easily answer. For degree-seeking certification students, we must wait until your degree posts to your official transcript. This can take up to 4 weeks after the graduation ceremony.  For certification only students, we must wait for grades to be declared as official by the Registrar's Office. This usually happens the week after the last finals are proctored. If you have satisfied all other requirements related to your program, and are simply waiting for degrees or grades to be official, then you will be recommended in the order your application was received based on the time your degree/grades post.  If you have questions related to when your degree or grades will officially post, please contact the Registrar's Office.
Do not contact the TExES Advising Office, Clinical Practice Office, or Certification Office to ask when you will be recommended.

Q: How will I know my application has been processed and that I have been recommended?

You will receive an email from the Texas Education Agency after your application has been processed stating that you have been recommended for certification by UNT. So long as you have paid all fees and completed fingerprinting, your certificate should be issued within 7-10 business days following that email.  If your certificate has not posted within that timeframe after you have been recommend, do not contact UNT to find out why your certificate has not been issued.  You will need to contact TEA at 512-936-8400 regarding questions about certification at that point.

Q: What do I put in the Subject Applying For box on my application?

The subject you are applying for is related to the certification program you completed. For instance, if you were a Core Subjects EC-6 with ESL student, then you will type in 'Core Subjects EC-6 w/ ESL' into the box.

Q: Do I have to complete fingerprinting?

Yes. You are requesting to be professionally certified in the State of Texas to work with children, which requires extensive background checks. If you do not complete the fingerprinting requirements, TEA will never award your certificate.

Q: I don't have two years teaching experience, but completed a Principal/School Librarian/School Counselor/Educational Diagnostician program. Can I apply for my certificate without having the 2 years required experience?

No. Having two years of qualified teaching experience in order to obtain a professional certificate in the above areas is a state-level requirement and cannot be bypassed by UNT.  It is recommended that you obtain your two years experience as soon as possible and submit your TSR to the College of Education Student Advising Office so that you can be certified as soon as the requirement is met.  Your Teacher Service Record must indicate that you were the Teacher of Record in order for the experience to qualify.
