Summer Law Conference

Violence on Campus: Legal Issues, Practical Actions - July 1st at UNT

The conference program is now available!

The UNT Texas Higher Education Law Conference, in response to great interest, a challenging legal environment, and heightened focus on campus safety, will sponsor a special, one-day session, Violence on Campus: Legal Issues, Practical Actions, on Monday, July 1, on the campus of the University of North Texas, Denton. Registration is now open.

The conference will consider relevant law and intervention, prevention, and response strategies.

General sessions include:

W. Scott Lewis of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management, and president of the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association, will present on the topic of behavioral intervention. He has been among the most well-received speakers at the annual Texas Higher Education Law Conference.

G. Richard Hill, general counsel for Weber State University, will share his legal experience on concealed carry of firearms on campus, which has been in effect in Utah since 2007.  Mr. Hill is perhaps the only university general counsel in the US who has been shot in the performance of his duties, at a campus hearing in 1993.

John Nicoletti, a psychologist and principal of the firm Nicoletti-Flater Associates, will speak from his expertise and decades of consulting on police and public safety psychology, crisis intervention, trauma recovery, and violence prevention.  Dr. Nicolleti is an author of the 2009 book Violence Goes to College: The Authoritative Guide to Prevention and Intervention.

Luncheon speaker Justin H. Lonon, Vice Chancellor, Public & Governmental Affairs for Dallas County Community College District, will provide a review of the 2013 session of the Texas State Legislature and implications for higher education.
