Window to Educational Opportunities: UNT Hosts Collaborative Program at Mexican Consulate General in Dallas

Presenters from the eventThe University of North Texas and the Consulate General of Mexico in Dallas co-hosted an educational fair, "Logra tus sueños con UNT/Follow Your Dreams with UNT," for middle school students and their families at the consulate in Dallas on May 2. The event helped families explore the future educational and professional opportunities offered by a university education, as well as what it's like to participate in activities associated with various career fields. Students were also offered workshops on engineering, climate, and becoming a leader on environmental issues facing the community. Information on college admissions and financial support was also provided.

A special welcome was provided by Consul General José Octavio Tripp Villanueva, and the keynote speaker was Claudia E. Torrescano, Founder of the Women's Institute in Dallas. Other featured speakers were two UNT undergraduate students, Ruben Fuentes and Yuridia Montelongo. Workshop sessions attended by participants were led by UNT faculty, Nandika D'Souza, Rossana Ramírez Boyd, Ricardo González-Carriedo, and Sudah Arlikattii. Parents interacted with Nancy Hong, Director of UNT's Innovation Greenhouse, and Dina Castro, UNT's Velma E. Schmidt Endowed Chair in Early Childhood Education.

UNT presenters from the College of Education, UNT-International, the College of Engineering, the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, the College of Music, and Innovation Greenhouse. Assistance for the event was provided by members of the UNT Bilingual and ESL Education Organization (BESO) and the UNT Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Participants came from the north Texas community served by the consulate.

Also present at this event were ten administrators, faculty, and doctoral students from the state of Jalisco in Mexico. The group had come to Texas for the Conference on Education and Culture, which was co-hosted by UNT and the Secretariat of Education of Jalisco and was held the previous day, May 1, on the UNT campus.

Organizers of the event from UNT included Nancy Nelson, Meadows Chair for Excellence in Education; Rossana Ramírez Boyd, Director of Bilingual and ESL Education Programs; Yilmin Koo, Doctoral Student in Curriculum and Instruction; Gabriel Carranza, Assistant Vice Provost for Global Engagement; Manuel Goel, Director, Mexican Liaisons for UNT-International; and Amanda White Bennett, Director of Global Partnerships and Research Engagement for UNT-International. Organizers from the Mexican Consulate included Ursula Rojas Weiser, Consul for Community Affairs, and Guillermo Carrillo Rodriguez, Liaison, Community Affairs.
