Higher Education Graduate Admissions

In addition to being accepted into the UNT's Toulouse Graduate School, there are separate procedures for Master's and Doctoral program applicants. Please note admission to Toulouse Graduate School does not guarantee admission to the Higher Education Program.

Higher Education Master's Program Admission

Deadlines for application:

Master's Cohort in Student Affairs:

February 1 - priority deadline for enrollment in the following Fall semester
March 1
- for enrollment in the following Fall semester

Invitation to Interview for Master's Cohort in Student Affairs

After faculty review, applicants for the cohort program will be invited to interview with department faculty as well as interview for possible Graduate Assistant positions within the Division of Student Affairs.

Standard Master's Program:

March 1 - for enrollment in the following Summer semester
June 1 - for enrollment in the following Fall semester
November 15 - for enrollment in the following Spring semester

Procedure for admission to the Master's program in Higher Education:

Submit the following application packet by the application deadline

1. Complete the Toulouse Graduate School application form

2. Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to the Toulouse Graduate School

3. Submit official GRE or GMAT scores no older than 5 years to the Toulouse Graduate School

4. Completed Application for Admission to the Master's Program in Higher Education

5. Three completed Reference Evaluation Forms

These forms should be completed by a current or recent employer, a current or recent professor with whom you have studied, and one other individual who is professionally acquainted with your work. Be sure to sign and date each form and check appropriate confidentiality status box before giving the form to your references.

Completed reference/evaluation forms should be returned to the applicant in sealed, signed envelopes as per instructions on the reference form. No references will be accepted that are not submitted in a sealed envelope, signed across the flap.

6. A typewritten Writing Sample of not more than two pages, addressing the following:

a) Your goals and aspirations related to the field of higher education;
b) One or more significant life events that contributed to the development of these aspirations;
c) The single greatest personal asset that will serve you in realizing your aspirations;
d) The one personal characteristic or quality that you most need to modify, improve, or change in order to realize these aspirations; and
e) Any other information you think would be helpful in evaluating your application.
* Writing samples that exceed two pages will not be considered.

7. A resume/curriculum vitae

Return the complete application file to the Program in Higher Education Office in one envelope.  Incomplete files will be returned to the applicant.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the application file reaches the Program Office in time to be processed by the application deadline.  If a complete application file is not processed by the deadline, the applicant will not be considered for admission that semester.

Students who have not been granted admission will be administratively dropped from any Higher Education courses for which they may have registered.

Within one month following the application deadline date, each applicant will receive a letter granting or denying admission into the master’s program. For advising, please contact:

Higher Education Doctoral Program Admission

Deadlines for application:

For the EdD and PhD, the Higher Education Program reviews applications twice a year. The application deadline for the EdD or PhD program is October 1 for acceptance to begin the following spring semester and March 1 to begin the following summer or fall semester.

Procedure for admission to the Doctoral program in Higher Education:

Submit the following application packet by the application deadline:

1. Complete the Toulouse Graduate School application form

2. Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to the Toulouse Graduate School

3. Submit official GRE or GMAT scores no older than 5 years to the Toulouse Graduate School

4. Completed Application for Admission to the Doctoral Program in Higher Education

5. Three professional recommendations (download recommendation form)

Three professional recommendations are required, including at least one from a faculty member with whom you have studied or conducted research. Please download the recommendation form here.

6. A typewritten admissions essay, addressing the following:

a) Your reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education;
b) Major area of interest in the field of higher education;
c) Expectations regarding the program and career opportunities from the degree;
d) Your immediate and long-range goals;
e) Your work experience and previous scholarship as it relates to future career goals;
f) Educational background as it relates to future career plans; and
g) Personal uniqueness and how it contributes to the entering class and the program's reputation.

The writing sample can be a published journal article or book chapter, a research term paper, master’s thesis, or a professional report for which you are the sole or primary author.

Invitation to Interview

Admission to doctoral study in Higher Education, both the EdD and PhD, is selective and restricted. Admission decisions are made on a holistic basis by the faculty.

After faculty review, applicants may receive an invitation to an individually scheduled interview or conference call. Upon completion of the interview, faculty will make a final decision regarding an applicant's admission to the doctoral program.
