Message from the dean and college news roundup - spring 2014

Dean's Corner

ThomasWe are closing out another great semester and I’m proud of our students, faculty and alumni who continue to shine. We have continued our global initiatives through the second year of our international student exchange program, and we are engaging with our local region through a variety of projects and programs that will leave a lasting impression on our communities.

And speaking of our community, enrollment in Texas public schools is growing and changing – with over 5 million children now attending Texas public schools. Over 50 percent are Hispanic and over 60 percent are considered economically disadvantaged. This has serious implications for our teacher preparation programs, especially in Bilingual/ESL education. We are leading the way in teacher preparation so that these children have the opportunity to graduate from high school, get good jobs and go to college.

I’m delighted to share that we have made some transitions in leadership. Jim Laney is now chair of the Department of Teacher Education and Administration (TEA). Nancy Nelson, who previously served as chair of TEA, is now the Meadows Chair for Excellence in Education. Colleen Eddy now serves as director of the Office of Teacher Preparation and assistant department chair of Initial Certification Programs. And Keturi Beatty is leading our Development and External Relations office as senior director of development.

We are fortunate that so many of our alumni continue to keep in touch with the college. We had a great time hosting a tailgate tent at Homecoming last fall, and we reconnected with many of our doctoral graduates at Dr. Terry Crane's home earlier this spring.

We appreciate your support of the college. To make a gift in support of our scholarships and exciting initiatives, visit or contact Keturi Beatty at or 940-891-6860.

Thank you!

Jerry R. Thomas, Ed.D.
Dean and Professor
