Community College Current Issues Symposium 2018

This symposium was entitled Community Colleges Innovate! Co-sponsors included Tarrant County College District and National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE). Panelists included moderator Rufus Glasper, President for the League for Innovation; Gene Giovannini, Chancellor of Tarrant County College District; Joe May, Chancellor of Dallas County Community College District; and Steve Van Ausdle, President Emeritus, Walla Walla Community College.

Don A Buchholz Lecture 2017

The speaker for this lecture was Eboni Zamani-Gallaher, Director, Office of Community College Research and Leadership, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her presentation, Diversity and Divergence: Getting Beyond Enrollment to Bolster Educational Equity, included information on equity and achievement gaps between different racial populations across higher education sectors, with a focus on issues that most affect community colleges.

Contemporary Community College Issues Symposium 2016

This symposium focused on how policy affects community college access and affordability, including discussion of “free” community college education. Symposium speakers were Paul Fain, news editor for Inside Higher Education; Patrick B. Crane of the Oregon Higher Education Commission; Emily House of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission; and Joe May, chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District.

Don A Buchholz Lecture 2015

Deborah Santiago, Co-Founder, COO and VP for Policy of Excelencia in Education, presented Starting Point: Latinos in Community Colleges. Her presentation shared information about academic achievement and completion rates of Latino students in community colleges, challenges faced by Latino students in education, and suggestions on how to better serve Latino students in higher education.

Deborah Floyd, Professor & Graduate Dean of Florida Atlantic University, discussed changes in community college student affairs in her presentation, Old Wine in New Bottles: Student Affairs Leadership Challenges. Her lecture included suggestions for student affairs practitioners that could foster student success.

Contemporary Community College Issues Symposium 2012

The symposium, College Completion: Focus on Community Colleges, provided a forum for Texas community college leaders to discuss student degree completion issues in the state and nation. Discussion was led by moderator Christopher Mullin, Program Director for Policy Analysis with the American Association of Community Colleges. Panelists were Deborah Santiago, Co-founder & Vice President for Policy and Research for Excelencia in Education;  Gerardo de los Santos, CEO and President of the League for Innovation in the Community College; and Amy Welch, State Director for the Texas Completes initiative.
