Dr. Doug Elrod (Director) and Anne Strong (Assistant Director) Dr. Doug Elrod has worked for UBMS since the summer of 1996 and has been the Director for the past five years. Doug earned his B.S. in Biology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, his M.S. in Biology from Memphis State University, and his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of North Texas. He has been married to Dr. Diana Elrod for over 13 years and has a 20 year-old stepson, Alex. Ms. Anne Strong has acquired over 8 years of professional experience working with “Today's” youth. She has worked for UBMS since mid – August of 2002. Anne obtained a B.S. in Spanish from the University of Arkansas at Jonesboro and is pursuing a Masters in Counseling degree at the University of North Texas. She is the oldest of 6 children. Her hobbies include cooking, reading, playing any and all sports, and pursuing her passion: Teaching life lessons to our future leaders. |

Dianne Baskin, Director of Counseling After doing her own counseling internship with UBMS while completing her M.Ed. in counseling in 1997, Dianne returned in 1999 as the Director of Counseling. She is a certified School Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Dianne has been a high school counselor and is currently employed by the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD as a middle school counselor. Dianne's family now includes three of the greatest grandkids around with another on the way as well as four grown children. Dianne looks forward each year to spending time and working with the great teens that are accepted into UBMS believing that they are well worth the long days and sleepless nights! |

AdmissionsUNT's UBMS Regional Center is limited to Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search students from Arkansas , Louisiana , New Mexico , Oklahoma and Texas . Fifty new students are admitted to the program each year. To apply, you must be currently enrolled in a TRIO program (either Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search); entering your sophomore, junior or senior year in the upcoming fall; and be nominated by your Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search director or counselor. You must complete Algebra I before entering the program. The UBMS staff admits mature, motivated students who have a demonstrated interest in mathematics, science, engineering or computer science- particularly those students who wish to major in mathematics, science, computer science, or engineering in college. Application forms are available on this website and from your local Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search director or counselor. Completed applications (along with school transcripts and nomination forms) must be postmarked by March 1 each year.

As a UBMS student, you will live in one of UNT's residence halls and eat in one of the university's cafeterias. Resident Advisors - college students- will live inside the hall with you to help you adjust to being away from home. |
During the five weeks, students spend Monday through Thursday morning participating in a variety of classes including mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, computer programming , English, a foreign language, genetics, anthropology and study skills. In the afternoons, students work on research projects in their area of interest with college faculty and graduate students and participate in art, drama and/ or recreational sports courses.
On Fridays, students attend supervised field trips to area corporations who employ college-degreed students in math, science, and/or computer-science. Past field trips have included Alcon Laboratories, Electronic Data Systems (EDS), Boeing Aeronautics, and Dallas Children's and Harris Methodist Hospitals.
On weekends, students are treated with trips to local malls, Six Flags over Texas, and the Fort Worth Zoo. Other weekend activities include Putt-Putt, bowling, roller skating and a ropes obstacle course. A special weekend trip to Galveston features educational tours of NASA, Moody Gardens and a dinner cruise on Galveston Bay. The trip also includes stops at several Texas universities.
The UNT UBMS Regional Center pays expenses such as - room and board, books, supplies, admission fees to extra-curricular activities and round-trip airfare - for students in the program. As a UBMS student, you will receive a stipend each week.
