As educational standards are updated and changed by the state, certification programs and exams must also be updated and changed so that they reflect these new laws.

The University of North Texas requires that a candidate, who did not complete testing requirements by the published deadlines, complete a formal application and review process in order to request access to the new certification exam(s) related to the program the candidate completed.

Application Process for New TExES Certification Exams

To begin the process of requesting test approval for the new certification exam(s) related to the program you completed, you must first know which exam(s) you will be required to complete.

If you are uncertain of the exam(s) you are required to complete, you may contact the TExES Advising Office by email at COE-TAO@unt.edu to request this information. In your correspondence, please include:

  • Full name when you attended UNT
  • Your UNT ID number. If you do not remember your UNT ID number, please provide your TEA ID number. Do not email us with your Social Security Number.
  • Program completed (i.e. Generalist EC-6) and completion date.

Once you know which exam(s) you must complete for certification, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Download and complete the TExES Application with all requested information.

Step 2: Complete a formal review for the exam(s) you are requesting access to (see below for a list of approved review options). Note: If you have multiple exams that you must take, you must complete a review for each exam you are requesting access to.

Step 3. Submit the completed TExES Application and documentation of your completed review to the TExES Advising Office according to the instructions on the TExES Application. You may email, fax or hand-deliver it to the TExES Advising Office.

Your application will be reviewed after all documentation has been submitted to the TExES Advising Office. You will receive an email regarding your approval status. If you do not submit documenation with your application, you will be denied. The TExES Advising Office does not accept partial submissions.

Approved candidates will receive a one-time testing approval to take the exam(s). As of September 1, 2015 the state began to limit the amount of times candidates can attempt their certification exams before the candidate is no longer able to become certified in that particular area.  UNT limits the amount of times candidates can register to ensure that test takers are remediating between attempts.

Be aware that test fees are now $131 per exam.

Approved Review Requirement Options

Candidates have two options for which type of review they can complete in order to meet the requirements.  Candidates only need to complete one of the options and obtain the appropriate documentation to submit with their TExES Application.

Option One - Score 80% on a practice exam. (Note: Core Subjects EC-6 candidates must score 80% in each domain  to satisfy this requirement.) You may use any of the following resources for this requirement. Once you score 80% or better on the practice exam, submit your score report with your TExES Application to the TExES Advising Office.

  1. UNT Practice Exams - Former students must either attend a UNT practice exam session or schedule an appointment (Monday - Friday; between 8am and 11am). Email COE-TAO@unt.edu to schedule your appointment. Dates subject to availability. Exams are free of charge. Practice exams are given on the Denton campus only.
  2. TWU Practice Exams - Contact texesprep@twu.edu for more information, or register online.  $20 fee applies.
  3. 240Tutoring.com - Provides in-depth review for each competency and interactive practice questions designed to address scenarios found on each exam. NOTE: Not all certification area practice exams may be offered.
  4. CertifyTeacher.com - Offers interactive practice exams for almost every TExES certification area. Students who still have access to their UNT email account can receive a discount if they sign up with their UNT email address and the promo code UNT4728.  This discount code only works with a UNT email address. NOTE: Not all certification area practice exams may be offered.
  5. Region 10 Practice Exams - Visit Region10.org to view available practice exams and registration information. Fees apply. NOTE: Not all certification area practice exams may be offered.

Option Two - Complete a review session and obtain a certificate of completion. You may use any of the following resources for this requirement.  You will submit the certificate of completion with your TExES Application to the TExES Advising Office.

  1. Region 10 Review Session - Visit Region10.org to view workshop schedules and registration information. Fees apply. NOTE: Not all certification reviews may be offered.  Core Subjects EC-6 students must attend sessions for ELAR, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Fine Arts/PE/Health.
  2. UNT Review Session - Currently, UNT only offers reviews for ESL Supplemental and Bilingual Supplemental exams. Contact the Bilingual/ESL Teacher Certification Office at 940-565-2931 for upcoming dates and registration information. Be aware that UNT only offers sessions once in the Spring semester and once in the Fall semester, so if you miss the dates, you will have to wait for the next opportunity.
  3. TWU Review Session - If a review for your content area is offered, you may attend a review session at TWU. Be sure to retain your certification of completion as proof of attendance.
  4. T-Cert Modules - Currently contains modules for Math 4-8, Special Education EC-12, Science 4-8, Science 7-12, PPR EC-12 and ESL Supplemental. Complete all modules in a given area in order to obtain a certificate of completion. Some modules have a 1.5 hour chat session attached to them, but have no scheduled chats. UNT will waive the 1.5 hour chat requirement if no chat sessions are available for your subject area. Note: Core Subjects EC-6 candidates may not use the Generalist EC-6 module as part of their six hour review requirement. You must use Core EC-6 materials.

Candidates who live outside of the Denton or DFW area who wish to attend a review session may try to locate a review session in their area.  Approval must be granted by the TExES Advising Office prior to you attending the session, so please submit the institution or tutor's name, credentials, website, and any other information you have so that it can be reviewed by our staff.  If you attend a session that has not been given approval from the TExES Advising Office, it will not be accepted as part of your review requirements. Please allow our staff 5 business days to review your selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why am I having to complete a review or practice exam? I graduated from UNT and earned my degree there.

A. There are several reasons for this.

1.) Coursework may have changed since you completed your program, you may be unfamiliar with some of the content that might be covered on the new exam

2.) UNT would not be doing due diligence by allowing you to take an exam you have not properly prepared for.

3.) Additionally, on September 1, 2015, the state began to limit the amount of times candidates can attempt their certification exams before they are no longer able to become certified in that particular area. Each candidate has one initial attempt and four retake attempts (for a total of five attempts) per test.  UNT does not want any candidate to waste their testing attempts by not being prepared, and so requires all former students requesting access to new exams to complete the application and review requirements. It's simply in your best interest.

Q. Why am I having to pay for a practice exam or review session?

A. Sadly, there are just not a lot of free options for studying.  Even current students must pay for the materials they use to study.

Q. If I complete the application and review requirements, is there a chance I will not be approved?

A. The only reasons you would not be approved are if you complete a review or practice exam that is not on our list above or has not been pre-approved by our office, or if you are requesting access to exams for a program you did not complete.  For instance, if you graduated under History 8-12 but would rather get certified in Social Studies 7-12, and submit an application for that exam, the application would be denied.  UNT can only grant approval for exams related to your program.  Former students wishing to complete a different program than their own must transfer to an alternative certification program or another EPP.

Q. What happens if I do not pass the exam?

A. The TExES Advising Office will review your scores and determine what additional remediation you will be required to complete before you are granted an additional testing attempt. If you are not successful by your third attempt at the exam, the TExES Advising Office will confer with the program faculty for additional remediation strategies.  The program may require students to complete or audit additional coursework before allowing additional testing attempts, especially for students whose coursework is outdated.
