FAQs About Certification

Q: Can UNT recommend me before I apply to the Texas Education Agency (TEA)?

A: No. UNT cannot submit a recommendation for educator certification until after you apply online to the TEA. It is your application to the TEA that initiates the recommendation process. If you never apply for educator certification, UNT can never recommend you.

Q: Do I need to contact UNT to make sure my application was received?

A: UNT is able to view your application as soon as it is submitted on the TEA website so it is not necessary you contact UNT after submitting your application. UNT will contact you if there is something wrong with your application (i.e. you selected the incorrect UNT option from the entity drop-down menu or all required TExES exams have not been passed) or if we need additional information. It's important for you to make sure the email address listed on your TEAL account is one you check frequently.

Note: If you selected any other option besides "University of North Texas" from the recommending entity drop-down menu, then UNT did not receive your application and we are unable to view your application because it went to another entity. For example, if you selected UNT-Dallas as your recommending entity, then your application went to the UNT-Dallas campus.

Q: Do I need to submit my TExES exam scores to UNT?

A: No. Students do not need to submit their TExES exam scores to UNT. ETS (testing company) will report your results directly to the TEA. UNT can view your TExES exam results through the TEA website for recommendation purposes.

Q: I have already been fingerprinted by a school district. Will I have to complete fingerprinting again?

A: If you were fingerprinted using the FAST Fingerprint Pass through Texas Morpho Trust/IdentoGO, previously L-1 Enrollment Services, you may not have to complete fingerprinting again. You can check the Fingerprint Status tab in your TEA account (blue screen) for any acceptable fingerprints. Any valid fingerprinting results will appear within 48 hours after submitting your application to the TEA. You may also contact the Fingerprinting Division of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) at 512-936-8400 Option 3 to confirm any valid fingerprint results with the state.

Q: The TEA website doesn’t give me the option to pay the fingerprinting fee (or) My Fingerprint Status says "Fingerprint in Progress". What do I do?

A: It is possible you already have fingerprints in the TEA system; therefore, the TEA is not requiring you to complete this process again.

Q: How do I complete fingerprinting without a social security number?

A: Effective August 1, 2015, the fingerprinting process cannot be completed without a valid SSN. You can visit the Texas Education Agency website for more information.

Q: I submitted my online application for certification to the TEA, now what?

A: Please allow 7-10 business days for UNT to review your submitted application. Upon successful completion of all college, university, and state requirements your recommendation will be submitted to the TEA.

Check your application for accuracy. If you selected any other recommending entity besides "University of North Texas" from the recommending entity drop-down menu, then UNT did not receive your application and we are unable to view it because the application went to another entity. Incorrect applications will be removed and you will be required to submit a new application with the appropriate recommending entity selected. You may be required to pay the application fee again and complete a refund request through the TEA for the incorrect application. Review page 6 of the Applying for Certification and Fingerprinting guide if you have any questions about which recommending entity to select.

Q: When will I be recommended for certification by UNT?

A: Applications for certification are processed in the order they are received and after all program and state requirements are met by the applicant. After you complete all program requirements, pass all required certification exams, and the Registrar’s Office has posted your official grade(s) and degree (if applicable) to your UNT transcripts, UNT will recommend you for certification to the TEA.

Students should note that it may take up to 4 weeks after graduation for a degree to be officially posted to their UNT transcripts. Please contact the Registrar's Office if you have any questions regarding the posting of your degree.

Q: Can UNT tell me when I'll be recommended for certification?

A: Unfortunately, UNT is unable to provide a date in which any student will be recommended because there are too many factors involved that make it impossible to determine a specific date for recommendations.

Please contact the Registrar's Office if you have any questions regarding the posting of your degree.

Q: Can my recommendation be expedited?

A: Applications for educator certification are already processed as soon as possible. The College of Education receives a large volume of applications each semester, and asks that students be patient as we diligently work to process them all in a timely manner. Multiple forms of communication from the same individual(s) will only delay this process so your patience is appreciated.

Q: How will I know when I have been recommended?

A: The TEA will send you a confirmation email once you have been recommended by UNT. This email is sent to the email address you listed on your TEAL account, so make sure it is one you check frequently.

Q: When will I receive my certificate?

A: The TEA will send you a system-generated email once you have been recommended for educator certification by UNT. The TEA will not issue any certificate until all applicable fees have been paid and the fingerprinting process is complete. It is the responsibility of the applicant to verify all fees have been paid and their Fingerprint Status shows as "Fingerprint Complete." Provided you have made payment and completed the fingerprint process, official certificates typically post to your online educator account within 1-3 business days after you have been recommended.

During peak processing times (May, August, & December), it may take longer for the TEA to issue certificate(s).

Q: How do I obtain a copy of my certificate?

A: The TEA does not mail paper certificates. A printer-friendly version is available in your educator account. Log in to your account and select the View Certificates tab.

Q: Can I be recommended for a certificate other than the certificate I am seeking through UNT?

A: No. UNT can only recommend you for the certificate(s) you completed at UNT. Students seeking combined certificates (Core Subjects EC-6 with Special Education EC-12, Math 4-8 with ESL, Science 4-8 with ESL, English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 with ESL, Social Studies 4-8 with ESL, etc.) must pass ALL required TExES exams in order to be recommended by UNT.

Q: Additional Certification by Examination.

A: Once you hold a valid Texas classroom teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree, you may add additional classroom teaching certificate(s) through the Additional Certification by Examination application option. You can visit the Texas Education Agency website for more information on this process.

Recommendations for educator certification are submitted after grades and appropriate degrees are posted to the student's official UNT transcripts. Grades for any given semester are anticipated to become official the Wednesday after graduation, or soon thereafter. Degrees may take up to 4 weeks after graduation to post to a student's official transcripts. It takes 1-3 days for an initial Standard Certificate to post to your online educator account after you have been recommended for certification, paid fees, and completed fingerprinting. Once the initial Standard Classroom certificate has posted to your online educator account, you can register for additional classroom TExES exams through the ETS website. Upon passing the additional TExES exam(s), you submit an Additional Certification by Examination application directly to the TEA.

The Additional Certification by Examination is a process entirely between the applicant and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Therefore, applicants must work directly with the TEA during this process. Please visit the Texas Education Agency website provided above for more information.

Q: Why should I apply for certification if I don’t plan on teaching right away?

A: It's important to apply for certification once you have completed all certification requirements because the state of Texas is continuously updating available teacher certificates and the requirements for these certificates. If your certification track or TExES exam(s) no longer exist when you apply for certification, you will be required to complete additional coursework and/or testing in order to meet current state teacher certification requirements and be eligible for recommendation by UNT.

Q: How do I transfer my teaching credential(s) to Texas?

A: You will work directly with the Texas Education Agency to transfer your teaching credential(s) from out-of-state or out-of-country.

Q: How do I transfer my teaching credential(s) to another state?

A: Check your respective state education agency website for requirements. Educator Preparation Program Verification forms should be sent to the UNT College of Education (contact information is below) for completion. You must complete the Applicant portion of the form and provide the name and address of where the completed form(s) are to be returned. Not providing this information will delay the completion of your form(s).
