undergraduate advising elementary

Elementary Certification Options:
Generalist Early childhood - 4th or 4th - 8th
Generalist Bilingual Early childhood - 4th or 4th - 8th
Generalist English as a Second Language Early childhood - 4th or 4th - 8th
Special Education with Generalist Early childhood - 4th or 4th - 8th

Step 1.  The following process must be complete prior to enrolling in anyeducation course

1. Make an appointment with an advisor to complete a Teacher Education Admission application OR complete the form in the Student Advising Office without an appointment. NOTE: If you started an educator certification program elsewhere in Texas, you must complete this Certification Transfer form before you can be admitted.   
2. You application will be processed within one week of receipt.
3. Once you have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program, you will be eligible to register for teacher education courses.  Please call 940-565-2736 if you get a message stating you are blocked when trying to register for education courses.

Step 2.  Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program

1. Have an official certification degree plan on file or in progress in the College of Education Student Advising Office in Matthews Hall 105.          
2. Earned Junior standing (60 earned hours).           
3. 2.75 GPA in completed Core & Field of Study OR 2.75 overall GPA.         
4. Appropriate scores on all sections of the THEA Test (240 Reading; 230 Math; 220 Writing) or an acceptable exception.
5. Complete Application for Admission to Teacher Education from.

Step 3. Sit for UNT practice exams and TExES state certification exams

1.  During Junior year, apply to sit for UNT’s state certification practice tests (departmental competency exams) through the TExES Advising Office.
2.   Request to sit for state certification exams through the UNT TExES Advising Office.

Step 4. Recommendation for Teacher Certification

1. After passing your exams, you must apply online through the State Board for Educator Certification in order to be recommended for teacher certification. UNT will be notified when your application and payment is received.
             
2. File a graduation degree application during the application period for the semester in which you wish to graduate.  Applications are obtained from the Registrar's office and submitted to the Student Advising Office. Application deadlines are posted in the catalog, schedule of classes, and Registrar's website.
3. When ALL CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS are completed and your degree has posted onto your transcript, UNT will recommend you for certification.  Students do NOT need to contact UNT in order to be recommended, however, it may take 4-6 weeks for degrees to be posted onto student transcripts.
