Certification Application Instructions

1. Once you have passed your state certification exams, apply online for teacher certification through the State Board for Educator Certification. We recommend applying at least 2 months prior to graduation. 
2.

You will be prompted to set up an account and submit the $77 application fee.  UNT will be notified when your application and payment is received. All first - time applicants, including Probationary, must submit fingerprints and a $47 processing fee to SBEC. A new option will be presented to applicants to utilize the Fingerprint Applicant Services of Texas (FAST) program in order to submit digital fingerprints at locations that offer Texas Live Scan. This option will allow your background check to process in 2 days vs. 2 weeks.

3. Please note the appropriate route to certification to select for your application:
Program Recommending Entity
Trades & Industry (2000 standards); Marketing Education (2000 standards); Office Education (2000 standards); IMPACT; or Health Science Technology for continuing education credit (CEU) University of North Texas - Alternative Certification
Master Reading or Master TechnologyTeacher University of North Texas - Master Teacher
All Others University of North Texas - University Based
4. When ALL CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS are completed and your degree has posted onto your transcript, UNT will recommend you for certification.  Students do not need to contact UNT in order to be recommended, however, it may take 4-6 weeks for degrees to be posted onto student transcripts.     
5.  The following documentation may be requested to verify that requirements are complete: 

●TRANSCRIPTS
●TExES SCORES
These will be on file at UNT if you requested so on the TExES application, or if you obtained a barcode from UNT. 
●TEACHER SERVICE RECORD (TSR)
The TSR must accompany all applications where teaching experience is required.  This includes all professional certificates.  Career and Technology applicants must show Career and Technology teaching experience in the area of the target certificate.  If you are using two years of experience in lieu of student teaching, you must have proof that the school is accredited by SBEC and that you taught in the area and level of your target certificate.  
●CERTIFICATION PLAN
If you do not have a plan on file in the Student Advising Office, contact an advisor at (940) 565-2736.
●CERTIFICATE
If you are adding to an existing certificate, please attach a photocopy of your certificate with verification of passing the TECAT if you had to meet that requirement. If you are applying for a Career & Technology certificate, you must show proof of completion of an SBEC-sponsored workshop. 
6. The day that your certification is processed, SBEC will e-mail a confirmation with directions to obtain a letter of completion. When all SBEC fees are paid, your background check is complete, AND you have been recommended for certification, you can access a Virtual Certificate through SBEC. Your official copy will be mailed within 6-8 weeks.
