Center for Early Care and Education Research – Dual Language Learners (CECER-DLL)

The CECER-DLL was a national research center with the primary goal of advancing the research field to improve assessment, child care, and education for dual language learners (DLLs) from birth through five years of age. The Center pursued a focused agenda of research and national leadership activities that sought to:

  • Improve the state of knowledge and measurement in early childhood research on young DLLs and the needs of their families as these relate to children’s development
  • Identity and advance the evidence base for the best practices and strategies in early care and education programming to support the overall development of young DLLs and to effectively support their families

Funding for the CECER-DLL was provided by the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) at the Administration for Children and Families of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2009-2014 (Grant # 90YR0041/01 awarded to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Dr. Dina Castro as Principal Investigator and Director).  The CECER-DLL produced a series of working papers, research reports, policy reports and briefs, as well as, peer-reviewed journal articles. In addition, new products to disseminate and extend the work initiated during the CECER-DLL project period are being developed with support from the Velma E. Schmidt Endowed Chair, the Heising-Simon Foundation and the McKnight Foundation, in collaboration with Arizona State University. The products presented here are the result of those efforts.
