State Representative gives students VIP tour of the capitol

In February, Texas State Representative Roberto Alonzo and his legislative assistant Jesse Bernal gave a VIP tour of the state capitol in Austin to a group of UNT students. The Alonzo scholarship recipients and members of the Bilingual/ESL Student Organization (BESO) visited Alonzo’s office, the senate room and lastly Alonzo’s seat in the Texas House of Representatives.

“It was a great experience having a VIP tour of the state capitol with my students. As a BESO advisor, I very much enjoyed visiting with State Representative Roberto Alonzo, who started the scholarship that has benefitted so many of them,” said Lorena Ponce-Gwynne, bilingual/ESL education instructor and BESO advisor.

Alonzo is a strong supporter of bilingual and higher education. The Roberto Alonzo Scholarship program has awarded over $1.5 million over the past 10 years to UNT and UNT-Dallas students.

“I was truly honored for this unique VIP tour of the capitol,” said Ruben Fuentes, the president of BESO. “I am fortunate to be part of BESO and I am proud to say that I am a Roberto Alonzo Scholar.”
