Dr. Prathiba Natesan, associate professor of educational psychology in the University of North Texas College of Education, has been elected president of the Southwest Educational Research Association, a regional organization dedicated to furthering the advancement of research in education.

Natesan will serve as the organization's president-elect and program chair for 2015-16 and president for 2016-17.

In her new role, she will oversee the general workings of the Southwest Educational Research Association and help organize the association's annual meeting.

"I am honored to be elected as SERA president," she said. "I have been involved with SERA for over 12 years now — since I started my doctoral studies. Connections made here go beyond mentorship and networking. The annual meeting has provided a safe platform for exchange of research ideas. I truly believe in its mission and will continue to contribute to its spirit."

In keeping with UNT's commitment to sustainability, Natesan has already initiated a paperless system in the Southwest Educational Research Association by offering the program schedule of the annual meeting as an app instead of a printed publication for the last two years. She is also one of the founders of the junior faculty mentoring initiative for the association.

Natesan joined the UNT College of Education faculty in 2009, after serving as a visiting assistant professor in the University of Miami School of Education and visiting assistant professor in the Florida International University College of Education. She earned doctoral and master's degrees from Texas A&M University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Madras in India.
