KHPR students and faculty to present at ACSM annual meeting

College of Education students and faculty will present research at the 60th annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana May 28 – June 1.

BartonMitch Barton, (expected ’13 M.S.) and doctoral candidate in Educational Research, will participate in a featured science session with faculty and students from other universities titled, "Weighing in on Obesity Bias: Research and Practice in Physical Activity". He will present research on the "Relation between Weight Actions, Weight-based Teasing, Physical Self-concept, and Physical Fitness in Adolescent Boys and Girls." The findings of this research indicated that middle school girls were more likely than boys to be trying to lose weight even if they were in the Healthy Fitness Zone™ for Body Mass Index and aerobic capacity. In addition, students who were trying to lose weight reported experiencing more weight-based teasing and viewed themselves as less physically capable than those who were not.
