Ashleigh Krastin and Noel Marquez, undergraduate students from the College of Education, both walked away from this year's Honors College Scholars Day with awards from the category of social and behavioral sciences.

Krastin received first place in the category for her paper, "Measuring Student Success: The Effectiveness of Scholastic Reading Counts!"

"I am honored to have won first place at such a prestigious event among so many capable undergraduate researchers," said Krastin. "It was a long, taxing journey to achieve my final paper for submission, but I had a wonderful support system along the way."

Marquez received third place for his paper, "Effects of Morning Meetings on Students' Communication Proficiency."

"Winning an award for my research was an unanticipated, pleasant experience. Winning an award or receiving recognition never played a role in my research, and I believe because of that, I remained objective and thorough in every aspect of my research process," said Marquez.

The students emphasized their gratitude towards Jeanne Tunks and Janet Ray for acting as their faculty mentors as they prepared their research for the competition. Krastin and Marquez will be graduating this month with bachelor's degrees in interdisciplinary studies leading to teacher certification with a specialization in English as a second language.
