Professor Denise Egéa

"Growing Plurilingual in a Multicultural Country: The Case of Kazakhstan"

Denise Egéa is Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University, USA, and Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan. Among other titles, she is a Fellow in the Philosophy of Education Society, a Phi Kappa Phi Scholar, and an Officer in the prestigious French Ordre des Palmes Académiques. Across disciplines and borders, her primary areas of scholarship are philosophy of education and curriculum studies, culture and language studies, and philosophy and methodology of research, with a focus on ethics and on human, cultural, linguistic, and educational rights.

She is currently conducting three major research projects. The first is Education in Central Asia: Growing Pains in “The Land Beyond the River,” to be published by Springer. In a second project, funded by a grant from Nazarbayev University, she focuses on “ancient Kazakhstani philosophers,” “the philosophers of the steppe” (Akyns, storytellers, zhyrau, and bies), to explore what Kazakhstani philosophers can teach education. The third project, inspired by her students, is the topic of this presentation, “growing plurilingual in a multicultural country.”

Professor Paige Ware

"Conventions and Conversations: Adolescent Writers in Offline and Online Worlds"

Professor Paige Ware is Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Methodist University. Prior to earning her doctorate in Education, Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of California at Berkeley, she was an English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher. Fluent in Spanish and German, she was a Fulbright scholar in Germany before moving to Spain, where she taught in a bilingual Spanish-English elementary program.  

Her research focuses on the use of multimedia technologies for fostering language and literacy growth among adolescents as well as on the use of Internet-based communication for promoting intercultural awareness through international and domestic online language and culture partnerships.  Her research has been funded by a National Academy of Education/Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowship, by the International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF), and by the Ford Scholars program at SMU.  She is also the principal investigator of a Department of Education Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) professional development grant supporting educators in obtaining their ESL supplemental certification.

Dr. Walter S. Gershon, Associate Professor in the School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies at Kent State University, focuses on the ways in which young people make sense, the sociocultural processes that inform their everyday sense-making, and the qualitative methods used to study those processes. In addition to multiple book chapters, articles in such journals as Cultural Studies<=>Critical Methodologies, Qualitative Inquiry, and the Journal of Sonic Studies, and other publications, Dr. Gershon is guest editor of a special issue of the Journal of Curriculum Theorizing on the topic of Sensual Curriculum and is lead/founding editor of the International Journal of Curriculum & Social Justice. His forthcoming book, Overlooked: Formal Curriculum and Urban Elementary Students in an Era of Standardization, slated for publication in the winter of 2016, is part of Lexington book series "Race and Education in the 21st Century."

"Teacher Education in Mexico: Focus on Jalisco"

Visiting lecturers from the state of Jalisco, Mexico, described the state’s normal school system, which prepares teachers for various levels of education. Their own school, Escuela Normal para Educadoras de Arandas. prepares prospective teachers for early childhood education and primary education based on values of freedom, cooperation, respect, responsibility, lifelong learning, self-knowledge, and innovation. Pedagogical approaches at the school include project- and problem-based learning, case-based learning, service learning, collaborative learning, and also identification and analysis of critical incidents. The goal is to prepare teachers who use critical and creative thinking to solve problems and make decisions; collaborate with others to create innovative projects that have a social impact; engage in lifelong learning; act ethically; apply communication skills in various contexts; and use information and communication technologies. The four speakers also discussed issues relative to the teaching profession in Mexico, including regulation, salaries, benefits, status, and job security, and they also pointed to theorists and researchers whose work is particularly influential in Mexico.

Professor Rosalind Horowitz

"Literacy and Orality: The Reconstitution of Writing in Technologically and Culturally Evolving Contexts"

At The University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Rosalind Horowitz is Professor of Education in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching in the College of Education and Human Development. She also serves as Ambassador of Tier I Research and as member of UTSA's Research Advisory Board to the President. A former Spencer fellow, she is a leading scholar in the field of discourse and literacy studies. Through the years she has been well known for her work connecting orality and literacy, including her edited book, Talking Texts: How Speech and Writing Interact in School Learning. A forthcoming book, which she edited with S. Jay Samuels, is titled The Achievement Gap in Reading: Complex Causes, Persistent Issues, Possible Solutions.  Dr. Horowitz has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus/a of the University of Minnesota--one of only 100 University of Minnesota graduates from 1905-2005 to receive this recognition. An important role currently held by Dr. Horowitz is Chair of the Special Interest Group on Research in Reading and Literacy of the American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Horowitz is active internationally, having served as a visiting faculty member in Russia and visiting scholar at the University of Toronto. She has spoken on oral-written relationships in discourse in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, in multiple European countries, and in Israel.

Professor Zhang Hua

Former President of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (IAACS), Dr. Zhang Hua is Professor of Education and Dean of the Graduate School of Educational Studies at Hangzhou Normal University in China. He also serves the National Educational Ministry in China as a major expert on national curriculum reform. A leader in the internationalization of curriculum studies, he is on the editorial boards of Global Education and Transnational Curriculum Inquiry. Dr. Zhang Hua's research interests include curriculum studies, curriculum history, wisdom traditions, internationalization of curriculum studies, curriculum reform, teacher education, restructuring of classroom teaching, philosophy of education, and moral education.

Professor Hongyu Wang

Dr. Hongyu Wang, Professor of Curriculum Studies at Oklahoma State University, is well-known for her scholarship in curriculum theory and multicultural education. She engages East-West dialogue and works with and through differences of thought, as in her book titled The Call from the Stranger on Her Way Home: Curriculum in the Third Space and in two edited collections, A Journey to Unlearn and Learn in Multicultural Education and Cross-Cultural Studies in Curriculum. Her recent scholarship, including Nonviolence and Education: Cross-Cultural Pathways, draws from American and Chinese intellectual traditions in making the case for nonviolence as visionary work in education.
