Fact Sheet

The mission of the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation shall support and encourage an in-depth understanding of the nature and functioning of human beings in their physical, health, and leisure behaviors and the programs which facilitate an enhanced quality of life.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate

  • B.S. degree in Kinesiology with additional options in health/fitness and physical education teacher certification (EC-12).
  • B.S. degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies with options in program management and therapeutic recreation
  • B.S. degree in Health Promotion
  • Physical Education activity program- coursework available to all UNT students

Graduate

  • M.S. in Kinesiology, M.S. in Recreation and Leisure Studies
  • Graduate degree programs offer course work in research methods/statistics, sport psychology, exercise physiology, sport sociology, motor behavior, program management, and therapeutic recreation

Students

  • 1102 undergraduate majors (B.S.) in Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation and Leisure Studies, and 62 graduate students (M.S.)
  • 2,500 students per year in physical education activity program

Faculty and Staff

  • 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty
  • 13 full and part-time lecturers/non-tenure line faculty
  • 5 administrative staff
  • 22 teaching assistantships (Master of Science students)

Facilities

  • The Physical Education Building has approximately 90,000 square feet with classrooms, gymnasium, swimming pool, racquetball courts, and locker rooms. Physical Education activity classes also use outdoor facilities for tennis, soccer, softball, etc.
  • Bahnsen Gymnasium is used for Health-Related Fitness courses and has a weight–training room
  • Kinesiology laboratories for research and teaching in exercise physiology, sport psychology, and motor behavior
  • Recent infrastructure grants were obtained to develop additional laboratory space (Disability and Well-Being Lab, Psychosocial Aspects of Sport, Physical Activity and Health (SPAH) Lab, Physical Activity Research Lab, and Exercise Biochemistry Lab)

Outreach Programs

  • Administration of Fitnessgram in public schools by current UNT Kinesiology majors
  • Service Learning program in Kine 3020 (Special Populations); work with Denton ISD students with special needs
  • Pre-service students in KINE 3550 (Movement Framework Approach) and KINE 4500 (Movement Tasks in Games, Rhythms, and Sport Activities) practice teach in Denton ISD elementary, middle, and high schools
