Vol. 1, Issue 3, Fall 2009 Welcome! Jerry R. Thomas, Ed.D., Dean and Professor Welcome to the continuation of our newsletter, Results!.
The 2008 - 2009 year was a successful one for us, much of it due to
friends like you! We received over $2 million in gifts this year with
commitments of over $1 million for next. External funding was
over $12 million, of which $6 million was new. Gifts are
extremely valuable but particularly so because they benefit our
students. Enrollment remains strong with over 3500
undergraduate and 1500 graduate students. Many undergraduates
plan to become teachers/school leaders but many plan to pursue careers
in physical/occupational therapy, fitness leadership or family/child
development. Full time doctoral student enrollment continues to
increase with our greater financial support. 13 new
tenured/tenure-line faculty and 6 lecturers were hired including two
department chairs, one associate dean and the Velma Schmidt Endowed
Professor. New faculty bring exceptional leadership, scholarship
and teaching to the College. We are happy with the progress being made and hope you will continue to support our efforts! America's Best! We are proud to announce the UNT College of Education's ranking in the U.S. News and World Report 2010 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools"!
Our graduate programs were rated 109th out of 278 in national rankings
of College of Educations reviewed. Among the public Colleges of
Education reviewed, the COE at UNT is ranked 89th overall and among the
nine public TEXAS Colleges of Education reviewed, the COE at UNT is
ranked 4th. Among the UNT peer University Colleges of
Education reviewed, the COE at UNT is ranked 8th overall and among the
seven Texas Emerging Research University Colleges of Education, the COE
at UNT is ranked 2nd overall. The improved rankings are due to
the hard work and leadership of our faculty and staff, as well as
excellent graduate students. Read more. Reculturing Schools In March of this year, Dr. Jane Huffman traveled to Taipei, Taiwan as part of the visiting Scholar Program at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). All in the Family!
At UNT's Doctoral Commencement and Hooding Ceremony on August 14, Dr.
Alice Coe received her Ph.D. hood in Curriculum and Instruction from
her mother, UNT Professor Emeritus Dr. Gloria Delaney. In
addition to earning her Ph.D. from UNT, Dr. Coe has also worked here
from 2000 - present, handling the Research and Elementary Program for the Environmental Education Initiative between UNT and the city of Dallas.
This was a special honor for Dr. Delaney, a former UNT professor of 38
years. Among her many achievements, Dr. Delaney was elected the
first female Chair of the University Faculty Senate in 1985. She
taught Health Promotion, Dance and Fencing, coached the UNT Fencing
Team and supervised Student Teachers and Community Health
Interns. She was one of the 12 founding members of the
Biofeedback Society of Texas, and also taught the Health Education
