Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education

AristotleUNT offers a Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education (GACT-GATE). The GACT-GATE certificate is not the same as Texas teacher certification - although the courses do prepare a person to sit for the Texas examination for supplemental certification in gifted education by the state. When completed this Graduate Academic Certificates is listed on the students' official transcripts.

To be admitted to the Graduate Academic Certificate Program in Gifted and Talented Education (GACT-GATE)

First complete the standard Graduate School admission process for either domestic or international students:
(1) Fill out a application through www.applytexas.org ;
(2) Have all of your transcripts sent to the UNT Graduate School all transcripts from your previous academic work.

No standardized examinations (e.g., the GRE) are required for admission to Graduate Academic Certificate.

Concurrent Admission: Masters or Doctoral Degree Program and Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education

The courses leading to the GACT-GATE are the same courses as the specialization area or several masters and doctoral degrees. Admission to a degree program does not automatically provide admission to the GACT-GATE program. Students in masters programs with a gifted specialization and who would like to earn the GACT-GATE must submit an Application for Concurrent Graduate Academic Certificate Programs The following notes apply:

  • The application can be used by either domestic or international students;
  •  The application does not require an admission fee;
  • The application is valid for admission to a Graduate Academic Certificate only and cannot be used to seek admission to a second degree program (i.e., master’s or doctoral programs)
  •  The application should be sent to the Graduate School and should not be sent to International Admissions, even for international students.
  • The Application for Concurrent Graduate Academic Certificate Programs must be submitted before the department completes the Certificate Verification form.

Courses Taken for GACT-GATE

Pass these courses (usually in this order):

  1. EDSP 5105 Nature and Needs of the Gifted and Talented
  2. EDSP 5110  Social and Emotional Aspects of the Gifted and Talented
  3. EDSP 5120  Planning Programs for the Gifted and Talented
  4. EDSP 5130  Methods and Curriculum for the Gifted and Talented

Complete the GACT-GATE Verification form (download below)
