Intellectual Range of Highly Gifted Children Gifted
children are not homogeneous in potential and ability. Highly gifted children
are generally those who have IQ scores of 145 and above (Sayler, 2000). The more
highly gifted your child is, the more rarely he/she will find peers of the same
age. When they are forced to remain in social and educational settings that are
inappropriate, isolation and loneliness generally result. For this reason,
parents and schools are encouraged to work on an Individual Educational Plan
(IEP) for highly gifted students (Gross, 2004). The objective is to
support the child's intellectual need for advanced curriculum, while having the
opportunity to form friendships with children of like abilities and interests.
Acceleration has been proven to assist the student in both areas, socially and
cognitively. These options may be used in tandem or alone, and adjusted
periodically to fit the needs of your child as he/she develops.
