The Special Education Program at the University of North Texas represents a diverse coalition of individuals, interests, and opportunities. Our mission is to:

  • Educate professionals to provide appropriate services for individuals with exceptional needs.
  • Research theory and practice related to these individuals.
  • Provide consultative, programmatic, and resource services to school personnel, families, and agencies associated with exceptional individuals.
  • Develop leaders among professionals serving individuals with exceptional characteristics.

Achievement of our mission is enhanced by the faculty's research experiences, their high levels of academic preparation, and the service projects they coordinate. We will:

  • Provide quality graduate programs. Our primary focuses are in graduate training in autism, behavioral disorders, educational and diagnostic assessment, gifted and talented, and learning disabilities.
  • Provide quality undergraduate programs, to those students interested in careers associated with exceptional individuals. The undergraduate experiences of our students when coupled with appropriate experiences provide the backgrounds necessary for future graduate study.
  • Positively impact programs and provisions for children, youth, and young adults with exceptionalities. These programs and provisions must be commensurate with the uniquely individual needs and potential of exceptional individuals.
  • Identify and address trends in each of the specialized fields that are the focuses of our faculty. Identified trends are used to develop courses, guide research, and direct service activities.
  • Recruit and retain research-oriented faculty and students.
