The Parents of Newborns Project is aimed at encouraging healthy emotional and intellectual development of young children living in high-risk communities in Texas. Local partners include the Family Resource Center of North Texas, Family Health Care of Denton, Lewisville ISD, and the Las Colinas Hospital in Irving, Texas. Initially, this project developed educational materials for parents of newborns and distributed them in hospitals, targeting populations at-risk for child abuse. Currently, we are conducting research about parent education, parenting stress, and child development knowledge, comparing low-income and middle-class parents of newborns and their needs for education and community resources. Both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking families are participating; teen parents are also eligible for participation with parental permission. Dr. Angela Nievar, Dr. Arminta Jacobson, and Dr. Nate Cottle are collaborating on this project. Kevin Dartt, M. Ed., is the research coordinator and one of our doctoral students supported by center projects.
