Degrees

Master's Degree

M.Ed. and M.S. degrees are offered at the master's level in the following four tracks of study:

Elementary and Secondary School Counseling:

These tracks prepare students to become school counselors. Students become familiar with school counseling and guidance services, develop better self-understanding, and develop the competencies of school counseling and guidance specialists. The elementary and secondary school counseling tracks differ in some course requirements to appropriately reflect differences in the functions of counselors at the two school levels. These program areas meet Texas specifications for school counselor certification and academic specifications for Texas licensure as a Professional Counselor.

College and University Counseling:

The college and university counseling track prepares students for counseling in community colleges, senior-level colleges, and universities. The track provides counseling experiences in all areas of student life. This track meets academic specifications for Texas licensure as a Professional Counselor.

Community Counseling:

The community counseling track prepares students for counseling positions in various community agencies such as mental health centers, private counseling agencies, drug abuse treatment centers, centers for counseling the elderly, child protective services, child counseling clinics, family counseling centers, pastoral counseling settings, private practice, and business and industry. The program area provides the opportunity to counsel a broad range of clientele. This program meets academic specifications for Texas licensure as a Professional Counselor.
