Equity. Promotion of equity for all learnersrefers to the skills and attitudes that enable educators to advocate for all students within the framework of the school program. An important goal of the educator preparation programs at UNT is to increase educational equality for both gender groups, for students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and for exceptional students.
Banks and Gibbs argued that students whose cultural characteristics are more consistent with the culture, norms, and expectations of the school than those of other students have greater opportunities for academic success than do students whose cultures are less consistent with school culture. Achieving education equity requires that educators (a) recognize appropriate responses to cultural diversity, (b) critically analyze content and materials, and (c) use pedagogical strategies that increase chances of academic success for students of various backgrounds.
